FAHS has a strong contingent of competitive swimmers who are continuing to achieve some exceptional results at both local and New Zealand National level. The team is gaining momentum heading into the 2016 swimming season. Our team consists of swimmers who have qualified for New Zealand Opens which doubles as the qualifying meet for the Rio Olympic trials, New Zealand National Age-Groups and the New Zealand Division II competition.
At a school level, FAHS has two days devoted to swimming. We begin with the traditional swimming carnival which all students take part in. On this day the Campbell Shield is swum, a historic 400 metre event open to students of all ages and genders to battle out the distance event. Christopher Smithers held the shield for five years from 2010-2015. This year it is finally back in female hands with Keely McKnight winning the event.
Our top swimmers then compete at our competitive swimming day with the top performers going to compete at Manawatu Secondary School Swimming, North Island Secondary School Swimming and New Zealand Secondary School Swimming.
In 2014 at New Zealand Secondary School Swimming our team claimed three national titles. Our star performance was in the Senior Mixed Relay in which they won the gold medal in a winning time of 2.07.02. This same combination also took silver in the mixed 200 Freestyle relay in a time of 1.53.72. Two further individual gold medals were won.
In 2015 the team continued to shine at this event with a five gold medal haul. The Senior Mixed Freestyle Relay team won silver in a time of 1.52.29 and bronze in the mixed medley relay in a time of 2.05.39. Three individual medals were also won.
