Leave

Hostel policy is centred on ‘leave is a privilege and not an automatic right’. Students must either go home or remain in the hostel. Other than the initial first two weekends of a year for new students and Year 9 students, all boarders are able to apply for leave for any weekend subject to:

  1. Boarders fulfilling their obligations to hostel and school such as participating in a school sports team.
  2. Not being subject to a misconduct situation resulting in hostel detention.

Leave procedures are as follows:

  • Leave for home – Picked up by parents, public transport or a suitable adult. A leave request must be faxed, emailed or mailed and be received by the Wednesday prior to the weekend. Such requests must be addressed to the Hostel Manager.

  • Own car – Having a vehicle at the hostel is a privilege. Students must travel home directly and normal criteria from (a) apply. Only Year 12 and Year 13 students may apply to have a car at the hostel. The car can only be used to travel from home to the hostel and return. Keys are to left with the Hostel Senior Management. The student and parents must sign the form acknowledging that the student shall not take passengers. Please note that it is not permissible for Year 11 students to have a car at the hostel. The Hostel Management reserve the right to withdraw permission at any stage for a student to have a vehicle.

  • Special Leave - Requests for leave to other houses - in Feilding, for example. Both parent and host must sign a leave form. Leave will not be granted to attend parties or to visit members of the opposite sex. The final decision will be made by hostel management.

  • Hostel / School Ball - If senior boarders wish to have leave outside of the hostel on ball night they must be collected by their parents who will assume responsibility for them after the ball. Leave requests must give full details of parent supervision before and after the ball. Students are required to stay with their parents (motel or home). All other students will return to the hostel immediately after the ball when duty staff will ensure normal supervision. All ball leave is subject to receiving permission from hostel management. All students who are not picked up and supervised by parents are the responsibility of the Hostel Manager and the Principal.

  • Statutory holidays - Easter (Good Friday - Easter Tuesday) in Term 1, Queen’s Birthday in Term 2, and Labour Weekend in Term 4. The hostel closes for three days on each weekend.

  • Town Leave - On weekdays. Leave is granted on one day per week. Year 12 and 13 students may be granted extra town leave during the week. Day leave at the weekends can be granted but is subject to a leave request in the normal manner.

The Board of Trustees and Hostel Management reserve the right to close the hostel at late notice when special circumstances arise.

Leave applications must be made through the onlive leave management system - Boardingware. A link will be sent by hostel management for individual accounts to be established to manage student leave throughout the year. Matron must be advised of any bus bookings.

Food and Nutrition

Food and nutrition are an important part of the hostel. The Kitchen Manager and the Hostel Management plan a food programme in the hostel to ensure students receive a well - balanced diet and variety of food.

Student Rules and Discipline

These rules apply to all students. The intent of these rules is to maintain an environment suitable for learning and safe for the individual to ensure the smooth running of the hostel and to maintain its high reputation. Any large boarding facility can only be successful if the students respect and adhere to the rules and associated discipline system. The supervision of students over 24 hours a day, seven days a week is an enormous task and staff must be confident that students under their care are going to follow the rules for their own safety and the safety of others.

Rules

All students are expected to co-operate with staff and adhere to the routines as outlined. These may be varied from time to time but the underlying expectation for all students is that they show courtesy, respect, initiative and common sense at all times.

  • Alcohol / Drugs - The possession and / or use of alcohol or drugs on campus is not permitted. Students on hostel grounds, on leave or any other hostel related activity may not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Failure to abide by this rule is likely to result in removal from L.J. Wild House. Students will not decorate cubicles with alcohol / drug posters or any other offensive material. Management reserves the right to drug test any student who they consider may be in violation of the above rules.

  • Attendance - Students are expected to attend all classes. When students are not able to attend school due to illness or emergency, the Matron or senior house staff must be notified as soon as possible. Tardiness is not acceptable. Students must attend all hostel meals in the dining room.

  • Courtesy - Students are expected to treat other students and staff in a courteous and respectful manner. Discourteous behaviour will result in detentions.

  • Language - Offensive language and verbal abuse will not be tolerated.

  • Smoking - Smoking is not permitted. Offenders will place their position at L.J. Wild House in jeopardy.

  • Damage - All damage must be reported immediately. Deliberate damage to hostel facilities and equipment will be charged to the party concerned. NOTE: If offender(s) are not identified costs of damage may be split among all hostel students.

  • Privacy - No student may enter another student’s room / cubicle without that student being present or without express permission. Removal of personal belongings without permission is regarded as theft.

  • Sexual Harassment - Sexual harassment is not permitted. If it occurs, the procedures of the school’s policy on sexual harassment will be followed.

  • Safety - Students are required to follow designated safety procedures and carry out evacuation drills as directed.

  • Fire Alarms - Students should not touch the fire alarm unless there is an emergency. The cost for a false alarm will be billed to the student(s) involved.

  • Personal Grooming - As per the school regulations in the School Prospectus

  • Cleanliness - Personal hygiene must be maintained. Students must shower daily, particularly after sport and recreation.

  • Tidiness - The hostel dormitories and surrounds will be kept tidy. This is a student responsibility. Dorms, rooms, lounges, and ablution areas will be tidied before the students’ breakfast. The work of the domestic staff must be in no way hindered.

Hostel Serious Misconduct

Rationale

The school aims to have a safe and caring environment for its hostel students.

Definition

Serious misconduct would include physical violence, verbal violence, intimidation, bullying, sexual misconduct, theft, vandalism, absent without leave, continual harassment, breach of hostel rules and code of conduct, alcohol and drug involvement. This list is not exhaustive.

Guidelines

  1. Breaches of behaviour involving serious misconduct will be dealt with firmly.
  2. All students and parents are to sign a behaviour contract on enrolling.
  3. All breaches involving serious misconduct will be reported to the Hostel Senior Management team.
  4. After investigation the Hostel Senior Management team will refer the matter on to the Principal and the parents are to be advised.
  5. The Principal has the discretion to refer the matter on to the Board of Trustees Discipline Committee for consideration.
  6. Both the Principal and the Discipline Committee have the power to withdraw a boarding placement

Hostel Detentions

Students found in violation of the rules may be placed on hostel service by the Hostel Management. If a student is placed on hostel service, he/she will be assigned additional chores to complete around the hostel.

Stand Down

If serious misconduct occurs or there is an on-going violation of the hostel rules, the Hostel Manager in consultation with the Principal may stand down a student from the hostel. The Hostel Manager will inform and meet with the parents and provide them with a written copy of the stand down and its conditions.

Withdrawal of Hostel Placement

Entry into the hostel is a yearly commitment. Students are in the hostel for the full year or until such time as they leave FAHS. A full term’s notice is required, in writing, of the intention to withdraw a student.

  • The Board of Trustees reserves the right to claim a term’s fees in default of this notice.
  • The Board of Trustees reserves the right to retain the bond if a student’s boarding place is withdrawn on disciplinary grounds.
  • In exceptional circumstances the Hostel Management, in consultation with the Principal, reserves the right to withdraw a student’s boarding placement.

Hostel Events

L J Wild House prides itself on providing students with ample opportunities to participate in hostel life and share experiences with their fellow boarders. 

  • The House Quiz Competition – a inter house competition that will test students’ awareness of current events, hostel history and general knowledge.
  • Hostel Swimming Sports - an annual event between School House, Rangitane and Matatahi involving competitive swimming, fun relays and house chants. 
  • The Hostel Ball – an exciting and much anticipated social event on the hostel calendar.

Girls (Junior)
  • Skirt - Regulation skirt to be worn below the knee. Modification to the skirt style will not be accepted.

  • Tights - Black or navy in winter

  • Socks - Plain white ankle length socks in summer

  • Shirt - Chambray blue, long sleeved and shaped

Boys (Junior)
  • Trousers - Black regulation shorts or plain charcoal grey tailored school trousers

  • Socks - Regulation socks

  • Shirt - Chambray blue and long sleeved

Girls and Boys
  • Footwear - Black polishable leather regulation school shoes with a robust sole. No sports shoes, skate shoes or lightweight flats.

  • Black or brown leather Roman sandals - optional summer footwear. Not to be worn with socks.

  • In workshops and designated areas regulation school shoes must be worn.

  • Jersey - Regulation v-neck jersey or regulation polar fleece top

Physical Education
  • Regulation PE shirt

  • Regulation PE shorts

  • PE staff may permit alternative uniform items depending on the nature of the activity.

Optional items
  • Jacket: The regulation school jacket or a plain, unadorned black or navy blue rain jacket

  • Scarf: Only the regulation school red, white and blue scarf can be worn.

  • Hats: A plain, unadorned navy blue brimmed hat or cap providing appropriate protection from the sun may be worn outside. The cap must be worn with the brim to the front.

  • Tie may only be worn by Year 13 students.

Mufti
  • Standards vary from knock about clothes to tidy mufti depending on the occasion. While allowing for changing fashions, these standards ensure students are suitably dressed.

  • Dress at all times must be acceptable to the Hostel Management.

Labelling

All clothing must be clearly named. We cannot take responsibility for returning un-named clothing to the rightful owner. Please sew labels into obvious places to help our laundry staff.

Matron keeps a supply of laundry bags in stock for emergencies and breakages.

Laundry

All students are required to put their laundry (school and mufti wear) out as required daily. These are laundered normally within 24 hours to be collected the next day. Mending and naming of items can be done in an emergency.

Matron keeps a supply of laundry bags in stock.

It is essential that underwear is put into laundry bags. Socks or stockings also need to be in laundry bags.

Dormitory and Cubicle allocations

Dorm and cubicle allocations are determined by senior staff in consultation with the Hostel Management. Students are matched with peers that share similar interests or have shown to have a positive influence on each other.

Junior students in Matatahi and School House change cubicles each term to allow them to get to know a range of other boarders.

Dorm and cubicle allocations are subject to change and parents and caregivers are welcome to provide Senior Staff with any additional information they believe would improve their student’s living arrangements.

Lockers and Lost Property

Each and every student is provided with a locker facility at the L J Wild House. It is essential that students lock all valuable in their lockers. Boys are required to provide their own padlock or combination lock with spare keys to be available for staff. 

Students may wish to decline the use of a locker at their own risk. Lost or stolen items will be the responsibility of the student if not locked securely in the lockers provided.

The Hostel Board of Trustees meets each term to discuss and examine the needs of our hostel students.

 

L.J. Wild House Hostel Parents Association (HPA)

The Hostel Parents Association meets once each term and is responsible for co-ordinating key social and fundraising events for both students and families associated with the hostel. Each year there is a new project where fundraising money will be directed. For more information around this group please make contact with Hostel Management.
